Fundamental British Values

In accordance with The Department for Education we aim to actively promote British values in schools to ensure young people leave school prepared for life in modern Britain. 

Pupils are encouraged to regard people of all faiths, races and cultures with respect and tolerance and understand that while different people may hold different views about what is ‘right’ and ‘wrong’, all people living in our country are subject to its law.

The Key Values are:

•    democracy
•    rule of law
•    individual liberty
•    mutual respect
•    tolerance of those of different faiths and beliefs 

‘British Values’ are not taught as a discrete separate subject but are interwoven into our values and our curriculum.  Our assemblies and class charters at the start of term ensure that British Values are at the heart of what we do. We ensure our children embody British Values and realise that these are an essential quality to have. These values will be reinforced at Twickenham Primary Academy in the following ways:

Democracy

Pupil voice is highly valued at Twickenham Primary Academy. Pupils have the opportunity to have their voices heard through decisions made by the School Council who are democratically voted in by their classes and through regular sharing both in class, at playtimes and in assembly. 

The rule of law

The importance of rules and laws are comprehensive throughout the curriculum. These laws and rules that support class, school or country are reinforced through learning in PHSE (carried out using Jigsaw), through regular assemblies and whole school themes.  Our children understand that actions have consequences and it is their responsibility to behave in the right way and to make the right choices. 

Individual Liberty

Pupils at TPA learn in a safe, secure and nurturing environment. They know their boundaries and are encouraged to make choices safely. They are not afraid to answer questions and will stand up for what they believe in. Lessons encourage children to work in a group and have their say. They are happy to agree and disagree with their peers and give reasons why. Our pupils have the freedom to choose from a number of extra curricular activities. Our E-safety and PSHE curriculum will allow the children to express themselves and make choices safely. 

Mutual Respect

Our behaviour policy encourages children to respect themselves and others and to work as a team.  The concept is discussed in PSHE and RE lessons as well as whole school ethos and themes.

Tolerance of those of different faiths and beliefs

This is promoted through every aspect of school life. PSHE and RE lessons equip children with an understanding of different faiths and beliefs and the values which different religions hold.  Children will be taught to respect each other and welcome differences and learn from them.

Pupil Voice - Our school council represents pupils from across the student body, ensuring that all pupils within the school have a voice that is listened to. They demonstrate how democracy works by actively promoting democratic processes within the school council whose members are voted for by pupils. 

We will use opportunities such as general or local elections to hold mock elections to promote the fundamental British values, and provide pupils with the opportunity to learn how to argue and defend points of view

Pupil Voice – including regular OLT-wide surveys and in-house questionnaires ensure we gather and listen to pupils’ ideas and make necessary improvements.
