What is the Sports Funding? The National Picture

Sports funding was introduced by the Government in September 2013. It was designed to give additional money to support schools in developing Physical Education in Schools and build an ‘Olympic Legacy’.

Schools will have to spend the sports funding on improving their provision of PE and sport, but have the freedom to choose how they do this. At Twickenham Primary Academy sport and physical education are a priority. We employ a teacher with a PE specialism, have some form of physical exercise every day in our curriculum, run internal sports events and hold an ambitious Sports Day at the end of the year. We are also an active member of the Richmond Sports Partnership - taking part in a range of sports competitions throughout the year.

Primary schools receive additional funding from the government to improve their PE and sports provision. The PE and Sport Premium funding for each school is based on their number of pupils in Years 1 to 6. In most cases, the amount received is determined by the number of eligible pupils at the school based on the January school census. Schools must spend the additional money on improving the quality of their PE provision for the benefit of their pupils.

There are 5 key indicators that schools should expect to see improvement across:

  • the engagement of all pupils in regular physical activity - the Chief Medical Officer guidelines recommend that all children and young people aged 5 to 18 engage in at least 60 minutes of physical activity a day, of which 30 minutes should be in school
  • the profile of PE and sport is raised across the school as a tool for whole-school improvement
  • increased confidence, knowledge and skills of all staff in teaching PE and sport
  • broader experience of a range of sports and activities offered to all pupils
  • increased participation in competitive sport

What outcomes do we expect from this additional input?

We will be continuously monitoring the impact of these additional activities closely and expect:

  • standards of fitness to rise, shown by fitness tests

  • skills will be developed in eye ball coordination, balance and agility, understanding of games and team work

  • full attendance of extra-curricular sports and physical activities clubs

  • physical activities will be enjoyed by all pupils - measured in our annual pupil survey
